Sushant Singh Rajput death case: CBI sleuths to start their work through simulation

Mumbai: Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation will begin their probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in Mumbai through a simulation exercise to establish whether it was death by suicide or murder. The team has also ensured they will not be quarantined upon arrival in Mumbai. Reconstruction of the crime scene will help establish the sequence of events and possibly reach a conclusion in the case, CBI officials told ET. The SC approved a probe by the CBI after a turf war broke out between the police in Maharashtra and Bihar. “While the complaint made by the father is that of abetment to suicide against Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and others, the first task of the probe team will be to ascertain if this was a case of suicide or murder. Reconstruction will help in the line of investigation,” said an official requesting anonymity. To ensure that there is no repeat of the Bihar police quarantine episode when the CBI team arrives in Mumbai, the federal agency has already got in touch with its counterparts in the Maharashtra police. “The issue has already been discussed and whenever the Delhi CBI team arrives in Mumbai, a communique will be sent to the local police and the BMC (Mumbai’s civic body) to allow them to investigate the case without being quarantined,” a senior Maharashtra government official told ET. “The Maharashtra government won’t cause any hurdle in the probe by the federal agency and unnecessarily draw ire of the SC.” The CBI has used reconstruction as a tool in high-profile cases such as the Aarushi murder and the killings of Pune-based rationalist Narendra Dabholkar and senior journalist Gauri Lankesh in Karnataka. “After studying witness statements, inquest reports and findings of the forensic laboratory, a reconstruction will be carried out inside Rajput’s Bandra bedroom where he was found hanging on June 14,” said an official privy to the development. The team will assess whether an intruder could have entered the room and although the simulation exercise itself won’t be the final word, it will help give direction to the probe, the official said.
