Join hands in Covid fight, Shah urges parties

New Delhi: Ruling out reimposition of lockdown in Delhi, Union home minister Amit Shah called on all political parties on Monday to mobilise their workers to help implement the decisions taken to step up the fight against Covid-19. Shah said at an all-party meeting that 18,000 tests will be conducted in Delhi every day from June 20 and outlined a number of steps to contain the spread of the coronavirus, from a 30-minute test to determine the infection to reducing ambulance response time to 20 minutes from 36 minutes and increasing the number of hospital beds by 5,000. “The home minister appealed to all parties to rise above political differences. Political unity will create confidence among the public and lead to improvement in the pandemic situation in the capital,” said a home ministry statement. “He said the government has to improve Covid-19 testing capacity with newer techniques and emphasised that Delhi will overcome the pandemic and win the battle by being united.” 76396402The meeting was attended by AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, Congress’ Delhi unit chief Anil Chaudhary and BSP’s senior leader Ajit Gautam. Following Shah’s call, AAP’s Singh said, “The state government plans to appeal to people who have recovered from Covid-19 to volunteer as health workers and caregivers.” He also said a new testing mechanism costing `450 will be introduced soon. Congress’ Chaudhary said, “Leaders attending the meeting gave proposals. We have submitted 11points as suggestions, including use of stadia and schools as hospitals.” Shah later visited the Delhi government-run LNJP Hospital and directed the Delhi chief secretary to install CCTV cameras in corona wards of every Covid hospital.
