Home Ministry reviews border infrastructure

New Delhi: Amid diplomatic and military talks with China, the Union home ministry held a review of the border infrastructure with officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Officials from the Border Management Division at the MHA discussed the ongoing projects and the existing bottlenecks in Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Sikkim, officials added. While the BRO is responsible for laying 3,191 km of road at an expenditure of ₹23,650 crore, the home ministry’s BM division has sanctioned 855.26 km for ₹2777.08 crore to develop infrastructure in the border areas shared with China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, as per officials.“The development of strategic infrastructure, along the border, includes construction of roads, mobile towers and strategic railway lines. The delay is mainly due to the limited working season combined with logistical issues such as high altitude, rugged and difficult terrain, natural calamities, forest and wildlife clearances, and land acquisition,” said an official who was part of the deliberations.
